In German we have a perfect word for the unknown aspects of the world: "Fremde". That's how we have always called what we did not know - and there used to be far more we did not know about than there is today. Throughout history, Europe constantly broadened and changed its perspective on the unknown and, while doing so, learned a lot about itself.
